What The World Needs...

...Is To Respect Marilyn Monroe and Her Iconic Pink Dress

By Hayley Williams

Now it doesn’t matter if you have seen the hit film 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' made in 1953, everyone knows the scene where Marilyn Monroe is in her stunning satin pink floor length gown singing and dancing about diamonds being a girl’s best friend. With Marilyn Monroe being a Hollywood legend and a pop culture icon, it is no surprise that the gown itself has become an iconic piece, as well as the ivory white cocktail dress Marilyn wore in the Seven Year Itch in 1955.

The gown had been made for Ms. Monroe to be able to move and dance in. It was one of her favorite gowns as she wore a white version of it to the ‘Call Me Madam’ premier in 1953 and it was reportedly sold for $370,000 when auctioned off.

Now we can go into the influences and recreations of the iconic pink dress. The first pink dress moment we’ll go into is Madonna in her ‘Material Girl’ video in 1984. The whole look was spot on with the color of the dress, the gloves, belt, bow and jewelry. Madonna really resembled Marilyn Monroe with the hair and makeup to prove it. Talking a little bit about the video and song, Madonna flips the script and sings about material things all while rejecting them in the video; she even ends with the simple non-rich guy. Madonna wanted to recreate the iconic scene because much like Marilyn Monroe, she too can relate to being seen as one thing when she is more than that.

The third pink dress moment has to do with the 2020 film ‘Birds of Prey’ and the music video that went along with it. With the film the character Harley Quinn has a scene where she is dancing and singing along to a modern version of ‘Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend’. The scene and the look is edgy and on brand with the film. Harley Quinn’s look is a bright fusion jumpsuit with matching pumps, gloves, bow and belt. Along with that, Harley’s hair and makeup is her own take on Marilyn’s look. With the music video, the song ‘Diamonds’ by Megan Thee Stallion and Normani, the video also recreates the iconic scene, while the song is an anthem for strong independent women who know what and how to get what they want.

When Normani’s part comes on she is doing her thing in a short pink satin bodysuit with the bow attached to the back. The bodysuit has diamond and rhinestone trim, straps and a belt plus the gloves nails attached to it. Normani also wears gray sparkly heels and black stockings underneath the body suit and it really ties the look together. Overall these looks are more modern and edgy but they still work.

Now the final pink dress moment is from the 2016 show ‘Crazy Ex Girlfriend’. The main character Rebecca uses musical fantasies to work out her life problems. In this fantasy, Rebecca is working out a love triangle where she is in and channels her inner Marilyn Monroe. Now the dress construction looks like the original only everything is blue, which is a color that does suit Rebecca better. The satin dress is floor length and has the jewelry to go along with it. Though the actress still kept her brunette hair one can still see where the influence came from.

Now that the scene is set up we can get into the gown's origins. The original look for Marilyn Monroe’s character was a $4,000 showgirl costume designed by William Travila. The showgirl look had jewels sewn onto a black fishnet bodystocking that went up to the breast. The piece also had nude fabric and diamonds covering it. William Travilla had to change that look last minute because pictures of a nude calendar shoot that Marilyn Monroe did had gotten around and it upset the people of the 1950’s. William needed to put together a look that was more covered up to appease the conservative crowd at the time. William Travilla had then decided to make a bubble gum pink silk satin floor length gown. It had black lining, an oversized bubble pink bow attached to the back that covered the zipper and two tone pink satin gloves. The gown was also paired with a bubble gum pink satin belt and diamond jewelry; though William originally had black gloves and heels he opted for gloves and heels that matched the color of the gown.

The second pink dress moment we’ll talk about is Anna Nicole Smith’s PETA The Gentlemen Prefer Fur Free Blondes photoshoot in 2004. Anna Nicole Smith’s recreation was done well. Her hair, makeup, dress, bow, belt, jewelry and two toned gloves were all on point. The look was flawless, professional and it made sense for Anna Nicole Smith to become Marilyn, because she was seen as a sex symbol and gold digger, when in fact she was just smart and knew how to get what she wanted.

Now for any other fashion enthusiast out there, let us know what you think and if there are any other iconic fashion pieces that need to be talked about!

In the end we as a society need to start appreciating the older films and give respect to the looks that stemmed from them. As in those looks have a story behind them, can be empowering and might have the power to influence generations of looks. Especially with this look, many who wear it may relate to being reduced to being an object but chose to feel empowered in the gown and try to flip the script on the old negative ways of life. So this, especially for women, can be the time for them to go back and watch this film, learn its story and try to understand why Marlyn Monroe and her pink iconic dress are so influential decades later.

In the musical comedy film 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,' Marilyn Monroe plays Lorelei Lee, a stunning showgirl who is engaged to a wealthy man, Gus Esmond, and she goes on a cruise with her best friend Dorothy Shaw. The fiance Gus suspects that Monroe’s character Lorelei is only after his money, so he hires a private detective to follow them and report back to him. After everything is all said and done Lorelei Lee finds out and Gus and her call it quits. That leads to the iconic ‘Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend’ scene where Marilyn Monroe sings and dances about women loving material things. That whole scene itself was a callout to Marilyn’s character and the ex fiance. However, the song and Marilyn’s character relate to Marilyn Monroe because she was seen as just a sex symbol, a dumb blonde or a goldigger, when infact she was more than that. This is why the scene has become an iconic one, as many women can relate to being seen as a sex symbol or a golddigger and they recreate the look with hopes of changing the narrative with it.
